Every bride is different – some brides know exactly what they want, while others take a while to try them on and decide. Typically, we suggest a bride shop for her wedding gown between 12 to 10 months before their destination wedding. It’s important to start looking early as some gowns have a long shipping time. For some brides, deciding between the two best contenders could take weeks, and you don’t need the added pressure of a shipping or alteration timeline to affect your decision.

Wedding Dress Shipping – 10 to 12 months before

If you are ordering a gown that has to be shipped, plan for as early as possible. On average a dress can take anywhere from 3 to 6 months to be delivered and much longer if it is a custom gown. So give yourself plenty of time and always add 40 days to the expected delivery date, just in case. Then you won’t be stressed if the gown arrives early it is a great surprise! If you are worried about cutting it close to your alteration date.. spring for overnight or three-day shipping, this is also a great way to be confident that your dress doesn’t get damaged in shipping and processing. Most urgent delivery services are done by plane and temperature-controlled vehicles which is always better for your gown. Lastly, for that extra sprinkle of peace of mind – add the tracking.

Bonus Tip: Start shopping for the groom’s attire about 8 to 4 months before the wedding

Wedding Dress Alterations – 3 to 4 months before

Selecting a dress is hard enough but envisioning it altered can be a whole different story. Make sure you leave plenty of time to find that perfect fit. 3 to 4 months is a great lead time for dress alteration and gives you enough time for a second fitting to make tweaks just before the big day. We recommend finding a seamstress you really trust. Don’t cut corners here, a good seamstress can really make a difference. Make sure you plan for this in your budget as well, always get an estimate before you make the big purchase to ensure you will be on budget. Some seamstress will charge you a flat rate while others are by service. If you plan to shop around for the perfect seamstress give yourself another month, this way you will have enough cushion time to find the perfect person and a consultation time. Additionally, you will be closest to your wedding day weight, the closer you are to your wedding day. Please – pro tip: do not alter your dress to an uncomfortable size in hopes that you will lose weight before the day. This adds extra pressure, during an already stressful time. You want to be fuelling your body before the wedding with good food, rest, and being active. You not only want to look your best – but also feel your best on yout wedding day!

My favorite thing about destination weddings is watching all of the guests explore a new place! I, myself, love learning more about this tropical paradise. I also really enjoy how every single event is completely different and really reflects the couple and their love story.
